Description

Day 1: We camped with the van on the side of the road just outside Amador Station Gas and Grocery. The next morning we headed to the gas station to get some gas for the two days in the mountains. Mike, who worked there was cool with us leaving the van. First, we rode up through Gold Note OHV which was mostly mild fire roads and some OHV style single track. Then we carved our way through to Pipi camp ground. North of that was even more OHV. We decided we wanted to go explore more so we headed out of the OHV areas and headed south of 88 to try and find some fire road and two track. We ended up down towards Salt Springs Reservoir on some private logging roads. Had lunch down at Mokelumne River and then blasted up and awesome single lane paved track to Bear River Reservoir to spend the night. We spent the night at 6k feet and it was pretty chilly but not unbearable. Some whiskey and a lot of rest. We didn’t know it yet but the next day would be a big day.

Day 2: In the morning, we headed straight out on a fire east trying to get to the backside of Kirkwood. It started off easy and progressively harder the higher and closer to Kirkwood we got. After playing around in a snowy area at around 9k feet we continued up. After hrs on the trail we assumed it had to go all the way through but in the end we reached the end of the trail. We reluctantly turned around and head back through some gnarly rock features back to a junction to take us out to route 88. We gassed up in Kirkwood and then headed back down 88 for a bit before peeling off to the north again finding a few paved/unpaved roads that wound back down through Pipi and back to the van.

  1. Thank-you, as always, just a little vicarious. However, I must point out that I would have liked a little more description of the action.
